Travel overview
Kilimanjaro extreme! To acclimatise, we first ride around Africa's highest mountain. From the bike you can also see zebras and giraffes. The route passes through the cultivated land of the Maasai and Chagga. The summit experience is extremely challenging. The nature of the trail and the extreme altitude of almost 6000 metres will demand a great deal from the biker. Individual and group tour.
The 370-kilometre MTB route with an altitude difference of 5200 metres takes you around Africa's highest volcano. The route follows stony tracks through rainforests, Chagga and Meru villages and the wild savannah of the Maasai. During an overnight stay in a Maasai cultural village, you will learn about their customs, songs and dishes. On safari in Arusha National Park, you can discover African big game. The trip can be booked with a local English-speaking mountain bike guide. In this case, everyone carries their own luggage on their backs. An alternative is the comfort option with a support vehicle, which also transports the luggage. In this case, the stages can also be shortened as desired or required.
The second part of the journey then leads up to Africa's highest mountain. This involves overcoming 3910 metres in altitude over a total of 77 kilometres. Since 2016, it has been possible to cycle up Mt Kilimanjaro by MTB. No separate trails have been created for this purpose, but you use the same route as the mountain hikers, except on the first two bike days. From Kilema Gate to Horombo Hut, you will hardly meet any other people, after that there are also hikers. The composition of the trail ranges from forest paths to root and rock trails and grassy fields. Further up in the vegetation-free zone, scree slopes with snow and rock dominate. In the upper part, you will have to push or carry your MTB more. The descents require a lot of skill because, as in the Alps, you have to ride up and down many small rocky steps. This makes the second part of the journey a very challenging pleasure. What's more, in addition to the day pack, you also have to push or carry your bike in the thin mountain air. Anyone who manages to get to the top of Uhuru Peak by bike can be truly proud of themselves!
