Travel overview
Cycle 370 km around Africa's highest mountain and then climb it to the Uhuru peak at 5895 m. – Individual and group trips.
The 370-kilometre MTB route with an altitude difference of 5200 meters leads around Africa's highest volcano. The route follows stony tracks through the rainforests and villages of the Chagga and Meru as well as the wild savannah of the Maasai. During an overnight stay in a Maasai cultural village, you will get to know their customs, songs and dishes. African big game can be discovered on safari in Arusha National Park. The trip can be booked with a local English-speaking mountain bike guide. In this case, everyone carries their own luggage on their backs during the cycle routes. The comfort option with luggage transport offers a support vehicle so that the cycling stages can be shortened as required.
The MTB tour is followed by a rest day before the hike begins. Our destination is the legendary roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro! Accompanied by an experienced guide, you will hike in 5 days to Uhuru Peak, at 5895 meters the highest point on the continent. The trip is planned via the Marangu Route with overnight stays in huts. If this route is fully booked, you will spend the night in tents and climb to the summit via the Machame or Rongai Route.

You leave Moshi on a steep track and cycle up to an altitude of 1800 m. There is more rainfall here, the farmland is more fertile and interspersed with coffee and banana plantations. The Chagga are simple farmers, so bikers are always an attraction for the children. After a short stretch of asphalt, there is a 13 km downhill to Lake Chala, where your beautiful lodge is located. The journey continues north, anti-clockwise, around the mountain. The first 10 km on single trails lead through the grassy savannah and you always have the snow-capped Kilimanjaro in front of you. Directly along the Kenyan border, the terrain gradually rises until you arrive in Rongai in the afternoon. One of the many hiking trails on Africa's highest mountain begins right at the accommodation. If you feel like it, you can "have a taste" of it. (B,L,D)
Cycling route 65 km, 1425 hm, piste/tarmac

After breakfast, you continue uphill on a hilly asphalt road to the highest point of this tour. Then you leave the Chagga area and reach the savannah on the drier north side of Kili via long descents and short climbs. The tires will definitely reach their limits because no one can escape the large acacia thorns! Shortly before your accommodation, which is located in a replica Maasai village with typical round huts, you can see the first wild animals. (B,L,D)

You will spend the night in the beautifully situated Mukuru Training Camp. In the afternoon you will go on a safari in a jeep to Arusha National Park. In the morning, transfer to the Marangu Gate (approx. 1.5 hours) and start of the adventure. The path is well-maintained and can be walked with light mountain boots. It is warm and a T-shirt or mountain shirt and shorts are sufficient. There is a packed lunch on the way, which is handed out at the start of the tour. On all days, you will receive a packed lunch in the morning before departure, which has been freshly prepared by the cook. You will spend the first night on the mountain in the Mandara Hut. An excellent dinner awaits you, as every evening. We also cook vegetarian if we have been informed in advance. (B,L,D)
Mandara Hut
Hike approx. 3 – 4 hours (+900 hm)
Bus distance 50 km, duration 1.5 h
Today's ascent overcomes 1000 meters of absolute altitude and the 12 km takes about 5 - 6 hours. It is noticeably cooler than the previous day. Today you should have a light jacket ready. The trail runs through alpine raised moor. There are giant heather and the first large senecios to see. To better acclimatize, it is a good idea to spend an extra day here. (B,L,D)
Horombo Hut
Hike approx. 5 – 6 hours (+1000 hm)
Bus route 0 km, duration 0 h
The grassland slowly changes and you enter the high alpine zone, where rock dominates. A landscape that reminds you of Mars. It is possible to descend with a mountain guide and porters at any time. If you feel well, you can climb another 10 km and 5 - 6 hours to the Kibo Hut at 4700 m. The Kibo Hut is the actual base camp for the summit assault. If you are climbing at night, you start around midnight or 1:00 a.m., depending on your fitness level. (B,L,D)
Kibo Hut
Hike approx. 5 – 6 hours (+1000 hm)
Bus route 0 km, duration 0 h
Now it's time to give it your all! The long climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro is 1295 meters in altitude, the descent to the Horombo Hut is 2295 m. Compared to the efforts of the previous days, this is a huge increase. On a cloudy night you will need headlamps, but in moonlight you can easily do the route without lamps. You reach the crater rim at dawn or in the morning sun. Africa is at your feet. You continue to the actual highest point, Uhuru Peak on the opposite crater rim, which you reach after another hour of "moon walking". After a half or full hour on the highest peak on the continent, you descend over an ash slope, and if you still have enough energy, you can "ski off". The trail for the descent is the same as the ascent. The path is firm later on, and you should reach the Kibo Hut without any difficulties. Around midday the porters will be waiting for you at the hut for lunch. After an hour's sleep, you descend to the Horombo Hut at 3700 m. In total, it is 21 km on this day. (B,L,D)

In the evening, you celebrate your unique experience and the achievement of conquering the 5895 meters of Mount Kili by the swimming pool in the balmy air. The tour guide gives everyone a summit certificate and says goodbye with "Kwa heri ya kuonana. Safari njema!". (B,L,D)
