On 17 January 1994, Mavis Mbaba opened a day care centre for 45 children in her private home in Khayelitsha, Cape Town's largest township. In January 1995, a piece of land was rented from the local council with the support of British Petroleum (BP). Gradually, "Noluthando - The Place of Love and Care" was established.
Today, 250 children between the ages of 1 and 6 are looked after here from 06:00 to 18:00 for a monthly fee of the equivalent of € 15-20. The children receive 2 meals a day. 14 kindergarten teachers are employed at the Noluthando kindergarten, 6 of whom (including Mavis Mbaba) are trained according to the Waldorf principle. After leaving the kindergarten, most of the children go to the Waldorf School, which is only 500 metres away.
African Bikers has been supporting the "Noluthando" kindergarten since September 1998. In coordination with Mavis Mbaba, our main task is to ensure the ongoing maintenance of the existing infrastructure and to create and improve new infrastructure so that the children can grow up in a child-friendly, hygienic environment and develop accordingly. In recent years, we have built classrooms and recreation rooms, equipped playrooms, organised the construction of a playground and a new fence and carried out general renovation and repair work.
Mavis Mbaba, the head of the kindergarten, is responsible for the educational content as well as the entire teaching programme and food supply. During the months-long corona lockdown in South Africa, she used her own energy and financial support from donations to cook for the children, who would otherwise not have had a hot meal due to the closure of the kindergarten and the poor financial circumstances of their parents: News24 - Report "Feeding Children
She was recently honoured with the Ackerman "Faces of Change" award for her endless commitment to children:YouTube – Video “Faces of Change””
