Travel overview
For those who want to cover fewer driving miles but have more time for day hikes and relaxation, the new hiking trip through the Western Cape is just the thing. The most beautiful day hikes around Cape Town, led by a local German-speaking nature lover, showcase the region's full diversity. Whether on Table Mountain or at the Cape of Good Hope, or in the wine regions around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and the Breede Valley, the nature is extremely varied and diverse. The tour group is kept small, allowing for more time and better catering to individual wishes.

This is the transition zone between the Fynbos and the dry vegetation of the Karoo Savannah. Montagu, a charming village nestled at the foot of the Bloupont Massif, is a popular destination for Capetonians. After checking into the 4-star Mimosa Lodge, we'll set off on foot along the Cogmanskloof Trail out of town. The 700m-high Cogmanskop offers a beautiful view of the village and surrounding mountain ranges. The last 2 km follow the river. The bizarre sandstone formations are very popular with climbers. At the end of the Cogmanskloof Gorge, hot springs reward the effort. (F)

Once again, the walk is from the guesthouse along Loverswalk into the Rietkloof Ravine. The path steadily ascends through the beautiful indigenous fynbos vegetation to the summit of Bloupunt, 1266 m high. Distant views of over 100 km are the rule rather than the exception. The descent zigzags into the Donkerkloof Valley and then back to the guesthouse. (F,M)
Dinner in accommodation or in a restaurant 5 minutes walk away.
Walking time 17.6 km, 1008 m elevation gain, duration approx. 6 hours

In the nearby Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Cape Floristic Region, the walk is initially flat until the Tweede Waterfall. The next 2 km are demanding, as you ascend the Corkscrew Trail. You will especially be rewarded by the King Proteas found here. The subsequent section repeatedly offers beautiful views over the valley and is aptly named the Panorama Route. The descent leads back to the vehicle with little gradient. Picnic en route. (B,L)
