Montagu, a charming village nestled at the foot of the Bloupont Massif, is a popular destination for Capetonians. After checking in to the Mimosa Lodge 4*, hike out of town along the Cogmanskloof Trail. The 700-meter-high Cogmanskop offers stunning views of the town and the surrounding mountain ranges. The final 2 km follow the river. These bizarre sandstone formations are very popular with climbers. At the end of the Cogmanskloof Gorge, hot springs reward the effort. (F)

In the nearby Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, part of the UNESCO Capensis World Heritage Site, the hike begins on a flat surface to the Tweede Waterfall. The next 2 km are quite challenging, as it leads up the Corkscrew Trail. The reward is primarily the presence of the king proteas found here. The following section offers repeated beautiful views over the valley and is not called the Panorama Route for nothing. The descent leads back to the vehicle with a gentle gradient. Picnic along the way. (B, L)

The climate is harsher here, and snow can be found in the winter months of June to August. Along the way, there are repeated spectacular views of the wild mountain world of the Tutoitskloof Mountains. Our farewell dinner is at the chic Guardian Peak winery, next to our accommodation.
