Travel overview
We enjoy the first 4 days in the Winelands, 200 kilometres away from the metropolis of Cape Town. The quiet, safe roads take us past many excellent wine estates that invite us to stop for a bite to eat. The terrain ranges from flat to hilly and is always framed by the Langeberg Mountains, which rise steeply up to 1800 metres. After checking into your rooms, we will take a short joint excursion (1-2 hours) in the Breede Valley (if time permits). Beware of driving on the left! In the evening, a joint dinner and briefing on the following days.
Distance by bus 200 km, duration 2.5 h
After breakfast, we cycle through the Kogmanskloof to Ashton. Continue on a hilly road to Drew, passing several farms. Along the Breede River, via Bonnivale, famous for its cheese, we head to Weltevrede wine estate. There, we will stop for lunch and a wine tasting, and then return to Montagu. (B)
Cycling distance 92 km, 840 am
Drive past vineyards and fruit farms into the arid Little Karoo savanna. The contrast between the barren indigenous succulent vegetation and the green farms couldn't be greater. The destination is the 1240m high Rooihoogte Pass with impressive views into the Langeberg mountains. You will turn around there and head back to Montagu. (B)
Cycling distance 100 km, 1520 am
After breakfast, we cycle along the Langeberg mountains, passing fruit and wine farms, up to the Op die Tradouw Pass, which stands at 950 m. Stop in the small Karoo village of Barrydale. Through the beautiful Tradouw Kloof, home to a variety of endemic Protea and Erica species, we head into the mission village of Suurbraak and continue past fertile pastures to Buffeljagsrivier. Afterwards, there's a bus journey back to Montagu. (B)
Cycling distance 97 km, 1170 am
Distance by bus 55 km, duration 45 min
A short transfer to Worcester. The cycle route takes you past numerous vineyards via Rawsonville into the peaceful Slangkop Valley. From there, the route continues to the entrance of the Bainskloof Gorge. This listed road was built 170 years ago and, apart from the road surface, has remained unchanged. The varied route leads leisurely through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cape Flats, with no more than a 7 per cent gradient uphill. Alongside fascinating proteas and ericas, you can also spot klipspringers and baboons. From the 600-metre-high pass summit, you can already see Table Mountain 70 km away. A long descent leads to the wine town of Wellington. The journey then continues by bus past many renowned vineyards to Stellenbosch. The country’s second-oldest town boasts a wealth of well-preserved historic buildings constructed in the Cape Dutch architectural style. Street cafés, galleries and shops selling arts and crafts invite you to stroll around. Short transfer to the seaside resort of Gordons Bay. Accommodation is in a lovely 4* guesthouse directly opposite the beach. (B)
Manor on the Bay Guest House 4*
Cycle route 73 km, 730 am
Distance by bus 120 km, duration 1.5 h
Directly from the guesthouse, it's a coastal journey along the Atlantic Ocean to Rooi Els. This scenic route, with only gentle hills, runs at the foot of the Kogelberg Massif and offers beautiful views of the opposite Cape Peninsula. After the return journey and a shower, you'll head into the heart of Cape Town, one of the world's most beautifully located cities, in a support vehicle. After lunch, you'll collect your race packs, and then check into a comfortable 4-star hotel, not far from the ocean. In the evening, we'll dine together. The seafood in Cape Town is outstanding: oysters and giant lobsters are specialties and affordable too. (B)
Cycling distance 42 km, 695 am
Distance by bus 50 km, duration 1 h
International participants always start between 7:20 and 7:35 AM. This has two advantages: it's still cool in the morning, and the South Africans who started earlier have qualified with good times. This means those aiming for a time around 3.5 hours will have good fellow runners in the groups that form.
The ride to the start of the Cape Town Cycle Tour is only 4 km. The first 20 km are on the closed city motorway, quickly taking you to the False Bay coast. The beautiful coastal road through Muizenberg, St. James, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simonstown is at most only marred by the wind, which is usually blowing from the front. This makes the ride back north along the west side of the peninsula all the more rapid. Scarborough and Misty Cliffs lie on the azure Atlantic. You are then cheered on by spectators, accompanied by drumming, as you pass Masiphumelele. Then comes the most beautiful stretch of South African coast: the 7 km uphill and downhill ride of Chapman's Peak Drive. The last climb goes from Hout Bay over Suikerbossie hill and then a brisk ride through the suburbs of Camps Bay and Clifton to the finish. From there it's only a few metres back to your accommodation. (F)
