In the morning you will hike to well-preserved Khoisan rock paintings that are several hundred years old and to the State Hall Cave, an impressive red sandstone formation. The orange stone glows particularly in the morning light. Continue through Namaqualand to Springbok. The wildflowers bloom between the beginning of August and mid-September. Accommodation is a comfortable 4* guesthouse. (B)

Short transfer across the border to Namibia. 3-hour canoe trip on calm waters on the Gariep/Oranje River. The contrast between the narrow, green shore and the barren, towering rocks is impressive. Drive via Sesriem and the Tropic of Capricorn through the country's barren landscape to Swakopmund. Stop on the way in the Kuiseb Canyon and at the plankton-rich lagoon of Walvis Bay, where large and small flamingos live. Overnight stay in nearby Swakopmund in a 2* hotel. The afternoon is perfect for strolling. A visit to the crystal gallery and the city museum is worthwhile. (B)
